About Morbid

The story behind Morbid Productions...

Morbid Productions was founded in the Finnish city of Tampere early 1996 when a local club called I-Klubi was shut down. As a result the local punks didn`t have a place to have concerts anymore and the Tampere punk scene threatened to wither into nothingness. Bored with the lack of decent gigs a local punk Leo Van Aerschot convinced the owners of the San Remo club to allow a punk concert every second wednesday under the name of Terror Club. Almost no-one showed up to the first two shows and the organiser faced serious financial losses. As a "death-or-glory" gesture a benefit concert for the local grass roots organisations was held on some saturday in Tullikamarin Pakkahuone, a fucking huge place (can hold hundreds of people) with an outrageous rent. Well, didnt get death but didnt get the glory either, just enough people showed up to cover the expenses.

A one final concert was held in may in San Remo after which the place went bankrupt (It wasnt us! Honest!). The gig was brilliant success and the losses of the first two concerts were covered. Again, with no regular venue and spring turning into summer the Terror Club was put on ice. In october Anna Korppoo, who had two years ago organised gigs called Tellus-Rock (named after a young punk girl who was brutally murdered and raped in Tampere in early 1990s) contacted Leo and asked if hed like to help them put together a concert for Oi Polloi (Scotland), JMKE (Estonia), Olotila, Speedapple and Syv Huokaus with other organisers being Vesa Asunen (Annas boyfriend) and Jani Pekkanen. Only problem was the venue, but place called Chopper bar agreed to host the event. That was also a bit of a problem, because the bars main customers were nazi skinheads (among them one of the owners) and redneck teddyboys, but what the hell, it was the only place we could get. The Chopper Bar choked with about 300 punks and other freaks that night. The place had never seen some many people inside, and the evening was brilliant with great bands and injuries to two of the four nazis that dared to show up. Chopper bar went bankrupt a month after that (with 20-30 nazis as your only customers you cant run a bar). But before that we had already shifted our activities to a place called Mexas which served cheap beer and Mexican food at street level and cheap beer and alternative music at the cellar. Few shows were held with foreign (Sanctus Iuda among others) and finnish bands.

At the beginning of 1997 a place called Sub Club was opened and we managed to hold one concert there (with Square the Circle (ger), Phychoterror (est.), Blubberheads and Absurd Attitude). Soon after that the place was closed because the owner hadnt bothered to apply for any licenses, and we continued to hold shows at Mexas. After august 1997 we once again moved our activities, this time to upstairs of a restaurant called Nykyaika (thats Modern Times in english), mainly because it was three times as big as the tiny cellar Mexas had to offer. During autumn and early winter some gigs took place with mostly foreign headliners. Once again things came to sudden end in january 1998 when minor fights with the police occured in the front of Nykyaika in the notorius Musta/Vihret pivt (Black/Green days. Cops told to the newspapers it was a full scale riot, they havent seen nothing yet!). Im not going to tell once again what happend during that weekend, you can check that out from these pages.

So we moved back to Mexas. Everything went nicely and we had lots of gigs with both foreign and domestic bands. This all stopped in november 1998 when the place went bankrupt (owner drank all the money, including profits, wages, rent etc...). Being once again with no place hear good bands play, we heard that Musta/Vihret pivt 2 was taking place in I-Klubi! A group called Ylioppilasteatteri had rented the place and to be able to pay the rent (quite big) they allowed several different organisers to run their happenings (raves, hip-hop, punk etc...). The organisers didnt have to pay anything for the space, but the theatre people kept the money they got from selling beer and the organisers kept the money they got from entrance tickets (the usual deal in finland, almost all gigs are financially organised this way). The first Terror Club was organised 9th of January 1999, and although not a financial success (we were able to cover our expenses) it meant that our future concerning punk concert organising was a bit brighter. As I write these last lines we have just booked the bands for our next gig in I-Klubi on 20th of february and we have once-a-month slot until next may, what happens after that, I dont know, but I know that theres going to be punk/hc/alternative/etc... gigs in Tampere no matter what.
